Do you know the signs that may indicate you might need a root canal? Several changes to your tooth and mouth may occur in the weeks root canalor months preceding a root canal. Portage and Kalamazoo, MI, dentist Dr. David Cooley performs root canals and other dental treatments that protect your oral health.

Is pain caused by a cavity or something else?

Root canals are used to remove inflamed or infected tooth pulp and replace it with a durable filling material. Not surprisingly, an inflammation or infection in your pulp can be painful. In addition to causing constant or intermittent pain, an inflammation or infection can make your tooth particularly sensitive to temperature extremes. If you need a root canal, you may experience an increase in pain after you drink an ice-cold beverage or dig into a baked potato fresh from the oven. Pain may also worsen when you chew, due to increased pressure on the tooth.

It can be very difficult to determine the cause of your toothache yourself. In addition to inflammations and infections, pain can occur due to cavities, a crack in a tooth, gum disease or even referred pain from sinusitis. If you experience pain in a tooth, make an appointment with your Portage and Kalamazoo dentist as soon as possible.

Gum and other symptoms

Inflammation or infections may cause a few other symptoms, such as:

  • Swollen Gums: The gum around the problem tooth may look red and swollen and may be painful if you touch it.
  • Tooth Darkening: A tooth that needs a root canal may appear darker than surrounding teeth.
  • Facial Swelling: Swelling around the jaw can occur if you have an abscess, a bacterial infection in your pulp. An abscess not only threatens your tooth, but may put your general health at risk. If the abscess isn't treated promptly, the infection may spread to other parts of your body, including your brain or heart. Abscesses require emergency dental treatment, which includes antibiotics and a root canal.
  • Other Abscess Symptoms: In addition to swelling, you may notice a few other signs and symptoms if you have an abscess, such as swollen lymph nodes, fever, extreme pain, or pus or a pimple on the gum near your tooth.

Root canals help you protect your oral health and avoid tooth loss. Call Portage and Kalamazoo, MI, dentist Dr. Cooley at (269) 345-1021 if you have any of these symptoms.
